here's my take.

Most Americans like bright and boomy sound (boosted bass and boosted treble). they also will get tired of listening to that sound fairy quickly (it's called ear fatigue).

BTW. a 12db boost at 45 or 60hz means that a 50watt amp need a 1000watt signal to keep that note clean, which that 50 watt can't do, so it clips the signal (which is why a lot of these posters said that their weaker speakers couldn't handle it ).

clipping is the worst form of distortion in any amp except true pure class a (very expensive) and tube amps. the even order harmonic distortion of the clip signal is nullified, bringing on a sweeter sounding tone. most of us listen to class AB (a lot of those amps claim to be class A, but they are lying) amp though where clipping sounds horrible

A lot of Canadians and Europeans (I listen to their style) tend to listen to flat, neutral laid back sound. you can listen to this type of sound forever

however, if you like that sound then go for it.

Let's have a little fun, shall we?

Macdawg (and anybody else who would like to try), would you be so kind as to download and play the udial clipping test? You can get it here:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/...showtopic=9772

Play it and tell me how it sounds. If your media player does not support the format it is in, look for a plugin (monkey audio), or download it in a different format. A few people uploaded it in different formats.

Once you listen to it, please tell me if it sounds like

A) A high pitch noise with the pitch swinging up and down with a phone dialing in the background

B) A phone dialing with a faint high pitch noise in the background

C) A phone dialing

or,

D) Something totally different

My answer is A. That high pitched noise seemed to freak out my dog. What the heck was that?

If you answer A then somewhere along the line you are getting clipping/distortion. The correct answer should be C, however B is also acceptable depending on how faint the high pitch noise is.

I'll have to try it when I get home. The first time I did it was at work on a PC with onboard audio... WOOT!

i answer b. i can barely hear the high-pitched noise but my sister's dog and my cat sure can. it's not too bad.

it sucks, because i don't have any dsp, eq, or effects turned on. i wonder where the clipping is coming from and how to fix it :bites nails:

now i'm about to flip out.

-edit- fixed. :whew:

that gets my vote for the best and most important test EVER

i find it very hard to get enough treble without that high-pitched noise coming back. maybe thats because i'm kinda deaf, especially around 3khz (cymbal crashes in my band). and often 3khz is where much of the perceived volume of music comes from.

I won't try it. from what I gather it is a high pitch tone test (with supersonic hash in it). back in 1998, I tried a similar test which fried my world famous Panasonic Ribbon tweeters (-3 db at 57,000khz). at the time, there was no easy place to to replace those speaker (eBay wasn't into full effect yet. I've still haven't seen much of those particular tweeters). I ended up paying 300.00 from some hi vi research ribbon tweeters from meniscus (they were magnaplaner based. they are the ribbon's cousin) which didn't sound anywhere as good as the Panasonic's did (a pure ribbon product)

they were something like these

but more really like these
