Default MP3 basics

I need to learn some of the technology behind the MP3 before I can select a management software.

1) When I connect my Sansa player to the PC is the player assigned a drive letter?

2) Can I place files onto the player without the benefit of a management software by simply using explorer to navigate the file structure?

3) I have another portable hard drive that I use to carry files around with me, each time I plug it in I can place files onto it via explorer, setup and remove folders and need be. I think of it as sort of a CD or a floppy that I placed into the USB port. Is this the same idea with the MP3 player?

4) What happens when I connect my MP3 player to the USB port?

5) If the answer to 2 is yes then what is t he advantage of a MP3 management software?

6) Does the PC think of the MP3 as just another external storage device, much like the external harddisk that I described earlier?

Obviously what I need here is an intro to how MP3 platers work.
