A friend of mine sent me a DVD from Europe.It says country code 2
and PAL.

As I cannot play it properly ( sound is ok but the colors are all out of
order,large spots in yellow,orange,blue etc appear on the screen )
I wonder if there is a media player which does the trick.

I use VLC Media player.

Any suggestions ?

yes. go to the hardware properties for the dvd drive and click on the DVD region tab and change it to europe.

WARNING: you will have to change it back to the US(or wherever you are) to make it work with US DVD's and you can only change 4 times. After that, your stuck with whatever you last had it in. I don't know if reformatting windows resets it or not.

Thank you for the info.I think we are on the right way.By changing the
region setting I got the error message

Unable to update region setting.Please make sure the drive contains a region 2 media and you have administration privilege.

I assume they mean that a DVD with the region media 2 is in the drive
( which is the case ) but how about administration privilege ?

I use Windows XP Pro and I am the only user of the computer.How do
I find out if I have administration right and if not,how to change ?

Use software, I think there is a free program called dvd43. It will make your computer think that the media is region 1, thus making it playable.
