Default M4V files unrecognized by Windows?

This is my first post, and unfortunately it comes in form of a question. I recently purchased an iPod and I'm having troubles downloading videos in the proper format from both iTunes and other places. I can use Videora to convert the files, but it seems tedious to have to convert files that shoud work in the first place. Especially those created specifically for iPod.

Can anyone tell me why the icon for m4v files (videos downloaded from iTunes is commonly this extension) shows up as an extension that Windows doesn't recognize? For example, when I click on a downloaded file (downloaded some trailers for iPod on the Apple trailer site) I get the dialog box asking me which program should open the file. I select QT and it crashes.

Am I missing a codec or a plugin? Am I explaining this correctly?

Thanks for your help and Happy New Year!
