Exclamation iTunes skipping and lag problems

is anyone familiar with laggy computer and skipping (just like a cd skipping, cept on itunes) when using iTunes? Also, nearly every time, all skipping occures after 10seconds of listening to any song... i.e. i can start a song and at 10 seconds it will start skipping/freezing up. Or i can listen to 5 seconds, skip to the middle of the song and after 5 more seconds it will skip again.
could some problems be too many songs or low hard drive space?
helpful info:
I have 7225 songs on iTunes. 95% are stored in organized folders in My Music (27.3GB) and am running the latest version which is 7.0.2
WinXP Prof
2gb ram
3500AMD
160GB Western Dig HD. 32GB free

Were you playing music in the CD or in your HDD?
You can rip the music tracks from the CD into lossless audio files such as FLAC or WavPack if you are worried about their quality.

Personally, I perfer FLAC!
