You can try going into the diagnostic mode. Turn the iPod off completely and disconnect it. Hold the menu and center button down to reset. Quickly, while the apple logo is on the screen, hold the BACK/REVERSE button and the center button. This will get you to diagnostic mode and can run some tests. If i remember right, you can connect it and your computer will still see it.

first see if there is a hard drive test. If so, run it and see what comes. Also, battery test.

You can also try plugging it in and seeing if your computer sees it as a hard drive. If so, format!

actually you guys solution is in reverse. you are in disc mode. you want to get it out of disc mode

I had this problem a few weeks ago. I forget how I fix it. but I think that I change the mode with itunes in it's preferences section (which I don't have installed right now)

right but even out of disc mode when i plug it into the comp is says do not disconnect then immediately shuts off and resets itself and goes to the exclamation folder icon. i went into diagnostic mode and click on HDD R/W which then says hard drive test where it reads and writes the hard drive but how long should that take?? i did it before i went to bed and i woke up the next morning and it still said harddrive test so i think the hard drive is faulty theres nothing else i can think of thatll fix it.

i have no use of a computer btw so dont give me solutions to reformat using the comp because it wont connect to the comp long enough to do anything. and im sure nothing is wrong with the connector cause my comp makes the connecting noise then 5sec makes the usb disconnecting beep when the ipod resets itself.

Take it to the Apple store, ask a "Mac Genius."

Also, you've killed the "ipodhelper.exe" or "ituneshelper.exe" processes and tried plugging it in, right?

yea... that would be your last best bet. If they won't help you, assume its the hard drive. You can also try posting on www.ilounge.com
