headphones and X-FI using ventrilo(VOIP)

Hello, I am having this problem with a friends sound card and headphones using ventrilo.
Scenerio: Using a X-FI Xtreme sound card and speakers and the sound is perfect. As soon as the headphones are plugged in all sound can be heard thru the headphones except when some one talks over ventrilo a (VOIP) software used in most MMO games. Prior to this the newest drivers were updated for X-FI Xtreme sound card. All ventrilo settings have been checked and tested including the inbound and outbound settings and making sure the sound card was set to be used as the audio. Everything can be normal, mp3's DVD's and CD's, MMO ingame sounds crystal clear but as soon as someone talks it is muffled where you can't here them at all. Another thing is when the speakers are plugged in and someone talks over Ventrilo it sounds crystal clear.

1. We have reinstalled both drivers and ventrilo, same results.
2. Checked Manage for any drivers that were out of date and disabled the onboard sound drivers, same results.
3. We have checked all the inbound and outbound settings and made sure Ventrilo was using the right sound card for Audio.
4. Thought possibly the computer was needing a bios/chipset update but not for sure yet till we explore all other options.

Any ideas or know hows on what needs to be looked at or fixt?
