Default HD for free?

I heard it was possible to receive an HD signal for free by just getting an antenna. Is this true. has anyone done this? How?

Well I think if you live in a place where it is offered, then yes you just buy the antenna setup and recieve the local HD channels.

Thanks for the link ncjimn. I got this table when I put in my location. Now i have to buy an antenna that has the color that has the most channels? Can some antennas receive several colors? What about direction. Heres a screen shot if it will help:
