Default Guitar to Computer

What kind of Connector or adapter do I need in order to play my guitar through my computer? When I look on radio shacks site, I see that they have the 1/4 inch to the 1/8 inch converter. I think this is what i need, but do i get a mono one or a stereo one. i will be plugging it into either my mic jack (doubtful) or that third plug on the sound card(i read that is where Im supposed to put it). Anyone have any ideas

As a guitarist and bassist for 35 years of playing, DON'T connect it to your mic jack unless you want it to sound like crap. You need some kind of interface and a decent sound card to capture audio, and it doesn't hurt to have an audio editing program either. I've said this in a couple other threads, but check out some podcasting packages. The main thing you want to do is connect your guitar through a mixer that can be connected to your computer through a USB2 connection. Then you can use your 1/4 to 1/4 cable you use to connect your axe to your amp to connect it to the mixer.

You should have some audio recording/editing software (maybe SONY's Acid Music Studio?) to really give you some dynamic possibilities. Last time I checked (last year), this program was around $80 at Best Buy, but you might be able to get it free with rebates if you buy Turbo Tax. (Then again, if you're under 18, your parents might be able to do the Turbo Tax thing and pick this software up free with a rebate). It's worth checking into.

Ive got software, and a decent sound card, along with an effects pedal (BP50 i think) but you would still say to get the USB mixer instead

I totally agree.... don't plug in through the mic jack if you want to get a good sound.

There are a TON of options though. You could go with something like this....

I have never used one though so I can't say anything about the quality of sound.

Or some sort of USB or firewire input might give you more flexibility... something like one of these...

Or a more traditional mixer with USB connectivity....

I know it is a lot more expensive than a simple 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch... but it will be worth it in terms of the sound.

If you DO want to go super cheap and are willing to sacrifice some sound quality, get a super cheap mixer...

and either a stereo RCA to 1/8 inch cable or a stereo 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch cable (depending on what kind of main outs your mixer has) and plug the mixer (main outs) into the line in or mic 1/8 inch jack in your sound card.

guitar -> effects -> mixer -> line in/ mic jack

good luck!
