So i've been troubleshooting an ongoing issue with my cousins audio. When he first purchased his computer (build it himself) the audio ports in the back never worked, so he always used the ones up front (for both his speakers and mic). I never knew of this issue until last week (the computer is like 6 years old). He said he wanted to now use the back ports because the ports in front became so messed up (he had to jossle the wires to get a decent connection) that he wanted to now use the back ports.
Okay easy right? I told him to dissconnect the front ports from the MB. He did that the back ports still didn't work. I told him he needed to update his drivers and left it at that. After a week he said he got the drivers and the audio worked. Great right? Negative. His speakers worked but mic didn't. And the weirdest part is audio and mic work, only out of one port (pink one). So he can only hear things or record/talk, he can't do both. I've never ran into this issue before.
I logged in and ensured all drivers were up-to-date. Went to asus's website and installed those audio drivers - didn't work at all. Installed the audio drivers through windows and got Realtek 97 installed and the same issue happend. One or the other would work out of the same port, but nothing will work in any other port. I've tried a ton of different methods. Asus website, Windows (which wouldn't install automatically through windows update when uninstalled, had to manually search for the driver), google - nothing. And what i don't get is i don't think it is a driver issue, b/c both mic and speakers work, just only out of one port.
Any ideas? Anyone ever deal with a manufacturing defect that only allows everything to go through one jack? Keep in mind this has never worked, with XP SP1, SP2, or SP3.
The motherboard is an AsusTek A7X8X- X Rev 1.XXX (belarc advisor).
