Default Freeware to convert .avi to...anything?

Does anyone know how I can convert *.avi video files to ANY other major format without buying new software?

I'm trying to make a DVD for the first time with 'Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6', and for some reason it won't recognize any of my .avi files. The 'Import Files' box for the DVD Builder doesn't show .avi files, even when the option to show only files with this extension is selected. It picks up everything else, though, so I hoped I could convert the .avi files to something else, any suggestions? By the way, I have tried Roxio support, but I'm not holding my breath for a helpful answer.

FFMPEG. I don't know of a version for Windows, but if you use Linux or have a Mac, you can use FFMPEG or FFMPEGX to do it for you.

Unfortunately, Windows is all I have access to. Thanks for the name though, I'll look around to see if there's a Windows version somewhere.

Does anyone else know some way I could do this on windows?
