first mp3 player, does it matter what jack i use to plug it into my stereo?

will it sound just as good with a compatiable plug that i've had for a few years or is there a certain brand plug i should buy to plug it into my stereo?

It shouldn't matter.. unless you have very sensitive ears. If you're VERY concerned about sound quality, get a plug with gold plated connectors... but it probably won't make a huge difference...
