DVD Subtitle extraction/injection(addition)

Sorry about the wierd thread title but I did my best to describe my question.

I have the american version of a japanese movie with english subtitles.
Today i bought the japanese version because its DVD-9, but it dosent have any subtitles. Is there some way that i can grab the subtitles from the american version (Im thinking i can use Vobsub) and then get them to play with the japanese video (cuz its higher quality) using a PC DVD player/program?

with vobsub i can grab the srt file and stuff but im not sure if they can be used with a DVD video.
