Dvd-r & Dvd+r

What is the difference between -R & +R? They were on sale at Circuit City and I bought a pack of DVD-R but my DVD writer cannot read the DVD-R.

get the +r. they are 2 different formats

I made that mistake when I got my first dvd burner 4-5 years ago.
