| decreasing photo size but maintaining quality a recent digital camera purchase has left me with an olympus 720. this can take 7.1 megapixel photos. the average size of a photo on high quality is 2.5mb, which is the way i want it for my collection but for the odd file which i would like to email this is too big. what do people suggest is the best way/program to make this files an appropriate size to send but maintaining the good quality.
any suggestions are appreciated. thanks |

| Well, Photoshop is probably the best answer. However, it is gunna cost you around $650. If you are an avid photographer, Photoshop is the norm for touching up photos, adding cool effects, etc.
If you can fork out the money, go with Adobe Photoshop.
Then, if you do, we can show you how to make it smaller while keeping the quality. |

| Maybe take a look at this: http://www.rw-designer.com/picture-resize
What you can do is make a copy of the pictures you want to send (in a smaller size), send them (keeping the originals). Then deleting the new small files.
And whenever you need to send another picture(s) simply repeat the process. |

Open the image in the Gimp, go to Image -> Scale Image..., then set it to "Cubic (Best)" and set the size, then hit Scale and save it.
Photoshop is a complete waste of money if you just need it to scale images.
To batch scale them, use something else. The Gimp is nearly as powerful as Photoshop and it is totally free. |

| And if you want something that can do nearly all (if not all) the same things Photoshop can do, but for a much lower price, check out Corel's Paint Shop Pro. That's what I use, and I find it keeps the quality exactly the same when shrinking images. |
