Default Copying DVD's...legal?

I know it's legal to copy home video DVD's. But the question that I just can't find a definitive answer to is if you can legally copy commercial copy-write encrypted DVD's that you already own for personal use....i.e.: copy a DVD, format it and put it onto my iPod touch. Anybody???????

It's an ongoing question. If you want them, just use a program like DVD Shrink to rip it to your HD and use a program like SUPER to convert it then copy it to your iPod.

Software companies. movie companies, musicians even know people make backup copies of protected materials but discussion of it isn't allowed here. Rule #5 http://www.tech-forums.net/pc/f66/an...rum-rules.html

My bad guys. But that begs the question (off topic I know): Where else am I supposed to get this info. if I can't even turn to the forums to for answers. Forums are the lifeline of that trendy little buzzword "web 2.0."

I can easily find "how" to copy DVD's. I just want to know "if," I can.

ok....let me see if I can help

simple answer to your question...you cannot legally copy a commercial DVD which is encrypted.

You can copy a commercial dvd, if you do not try to circumvent it's protection scheme...but chances are you won't be able to copy or play it, lol.

I used to be a proponent of "if they say we can't, then we shouldn't". But I have a ton of legally purchased DVDs, I expect to be able to view and use them for my OWN personal use, how I feel.

Now that is a far cry from many here and everywhere else, who think they can do what they will, how they will, and not just for their own personal use. Ie., copy and mass distribute and/or profit.

So, what you believe is what you believe, not neccessarily what you do . So long as we are talking about perceptions, ideals and opinions, it is wholely acceptable and not against "any rules" at least I think.

Recap....it is not legal for us to copy commercial dvds, which we own, that have copy protection. Even if it is for our own private use.

Exactly what I thought. Thanks.

By the way, it is a known fact that Bill Gates has his entire movie/CD collection on a server in his house which he can call up at any time in any room. I wonder how the world's richest man feels about backing up for personal use.....

I don't want to go against the forum rules here, so this will be my last post in this thread.

As long as your not putting them up somewhere for someone else to download them (IE: p2p, bittorrent, ect), then you'll be fine. There's a loophole that allows you to legally copy your DVDs for backup.

Like I always like to say, If you don't get caught, everything is legal.

Call up the MPAA im sure they can help you out. But even making backups is technically illegal due to circumventing the copy protection.

I don't know the ruling now, but 4 year, you could copy your own dvd for personal use. I know that some new rulings have been made, but I don't know if any ruling affect this one
