Default Computer sound system?

I'm getting my new computer next Tues and have a few questions about the best way to get good sound out of my computer. Currently I have onboard sound from my Dell dim 2400 using Logitech Z540 speakers. Not bad (compared to the $10 speakers I had before) but not what I'm looking for. My new MB will be an Asus M2nsli with an ADI AD1988B 8channel chipset.

My current home system is a Denon 3801 with infinity interlude IL60's and matching center, etc. I mention this to give you an idea as to the sound quality I like.

Do I use the onboard sound? get a sound card? Hook up to a receiver? What's going to give me the best sound for the money?
What's going to give me a mini version of my home system?

Do you need surround sound or gaming features, or are you just looking for sound quality here?

Looking for surround sound and gaming, and listening to music.

Surround sound and gaming...

I hate to say it but your options may only be the z-5500s or promedia ultra 5.1s.

They won't compare to your home theater.

What limits the options. Gaming? Surround? or Music?

Well, really gaming and surround.

A nice surround system can be expensive (as you know), and gaming needs a sub that just really thumps. If it were just music I would suggest you invest in a quality 2 or 2.1 channel setup.

I can live without the "thumps"although I do like bass. I was reading the thread Great Sound and it peaked my interest as to getting better sound out of my computer system. It got a little heated but audiophiles have a tendency to do that.lol.

As far as gaming goes right now I play one game but do plan on watching movies too. So your saying stick with a comp speaker system?

How much better do the z5500 sound compared to the ones I have? Is there better?

What do you have now?

I don't think the z-5500 or ultra-5.1 are great for movies. The recessed midrange on both of them makes it hard to hear vocals.

I actually do not know much about surround sound computer speakers.

Something better might be from cambridge soundworks.

Logitech Z540s. I read you like the ESI juli@, is the onboard I have gonna be much different than a sound card? I know the sound card would be better but will it be noticeably different using computer speakers or just a little better. What setup for sound do you have?
