I'm not that knowledgable about speakers in general, but studio monitors are supposed to be very good.

Well, the digital signal will always have to be converted into analogue at some point (because sound is an analogue wave), so you can't really compare analogue outputs with digital outputs.
Whether optical sounds better depends on whether your external DAC is of higher quality than the DAC that your internal sound card has.
If you're using the motherboard's onboard sound, then it wouldn't be hard to beat the DAC it uses (they tend to be cheap, and low-end or mediocre)
There are some internal sound cards that have quite good DAC's though.
If the external DAC is identical to the internal DAC, then the external DAC will probably sound better, due to the fact that the internal DAC will have interference from the rest of the components in the case (especially if you've got things like high-end video cards). Though if the internal card is shielded, it will not be so much of a problem (a lot of Asus's sound cards are)
