Default Audio Editing Programs

I wanna do some audio editing, mainly taking the voice and leaving only the bass (the backround stuff, drums, guitar, etc.) anyone want to suggest a) good audio programs for me to use and b) maybe spoonfeed me info on how to do it *humble little face*?
...you might not be able to do this because of they way the studios compressed it...if it is impossible, could you please tell me that to?

Thanks!

If you do this you loose ALOT of quality. It's really really hard to do to get it to remotely sound right. You are better off trying to find an instrumental version of the song.

I figured it wouldn't be in nice layers... just highlighting stuff and deleting...that's too bad. Thanks anyway, DJ-CHRIS.

You however can usually find a small spot without the voice and loop that and with some sample sets and reconstruction, voila you have a perfect instrumental

Thanks for the advice. I could be in trouble if there's a bridge or stuff in a different key. I'd have to recompose w/ garageband or something. (don't worry if you don't know what that last sentence means; it comes from a 8 year piano player.)

you can try using nuendo, or even acid products, I've found that soundforge is a good one. Look through musicians reference sites, even order some free catalogues...
