Default Ah...crap. (Driver Problem)

So, long story short, I flicked my computer off in a crash, yesterday. It couldnt load after that - itt'd just reset itself after Windows loaded, and I guessed that there was somthing wrong with a windows file, so I formatted.

...eh, on the wrong partition. I deleted that one, cursing myself, and formatted C: this time. Everything was fine, windows works again, but...

I cant hear any sound. Now, I installed a codec pack, an AC97 driver (I think), but as far as my computer can tell, I've got no audio device. What do I do?

Hello,

Go to Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager...

If you see Sound, video and game controllers click to expand it...What devices do you see? Is your soundcard listed, and if so, what is its status? Double click your soundcard (if it's listed) to find out the device status...

...If your soundcard isn't listed under Sound, video and game controllers then look at the bottom of the list to Unknown devices...are there any unknown devices listed?

I don't think so. However, under "other devices" there is an Unknown Device. It's icon has an exclamation mark over it, if that helps?

Hello,

It's possible that it's your audio device since it isn't listed as a detected device anywhere else in device manager.

Do you have onboard sound, or do you have a soundcard?

Use Everest Home Edition or Belarc Advisor to find out and verify what onboard sound or soundcard you have, if you're not sure. Also find out what motherboard you have.

Post back with the info.

Hello,

Alright, so you used Belarc Advisor?

At least we know that you have Realtek AC'97 onboard audio, but we still don't know which Realtek audio codec this is in order for you to install the correct Realtek audio driver.

Belarc hasn't seemed to be able detect your motherboard. Download, install Everest Home Edition , then run the program. On the right you'll see Motherboard in the menu tree. Click it, then click on Motherboard within that entry, and on the right it should show you the Motherboard Name - this way we can look up detailed specs on your motherboard and hopefully find out what Realtek audio codec it's using.

Post back.
