Default 30g iPod Classic Sound Problem

Hello, my name is Jimmy Sulecki. I bought my 30g iPod back in 2006 and was very happy with it for about a year and a half. It had the normal wear and tear; I've dropped it a few times but it has never seen water.

In the summer of 2007, I was listening to a song through my iTrip in my car when the sound mysteriously and without warning cut out. I examined it and found that all of the menus worked fine. It could play video, synch up, charge it, format it, and do everything else you could expect a healthy iPod to do, except that no sound comes out.

I've tried about seven different headphones and four different iTrips, and nothing works- the sound just doesn't come out. I have talked to a lot of people about this and so far no one has been able to give me an answer. I tried reformatting it, I updated all of the software on it, and still no luck.

I am now to the point where I just don't care anymore. It's been over a year since I could use it, so now I'm willing to try just about anything. If I were to take it apart, are there any cords, wires, plugs, etc. that may have come unplugged that would stick out or that I could check? If anyone can give me any input on this at all, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks a lot!

Hi jimmy,

Well, a good portion of ipod repair centers would say its' the battery or some other core repair which would have absolutely nothing to do with the problem. There are plenty of 'take apart' your ipod videos that i'd get looking through first of all. Things like reformatting/sync/charge is hardware related, so, this might actually be some thing that isn't on the disc itself. I'd consider getting involved in first, taking it apart then moving on from there, you'll have to be pretty careful, but, some of the time these things go bad and even if you replace 'core' parts in the ipod, might not fix the problem.

Yeah, there are plenty of things it could be -- a faulty jack somewhere, for instance, a loose wire -- but it definitely sounds like a hardware issue. Sorry to hear, it would probably cost less to replace it than to fix it at this point (depending on what you replace it with)

I just came back after some research, you could use a program called get back data 3.3, this often times mirrors the information from your ipod so you could salvage the music if you have any on it still.

Here's what I got for you.
My IPOD 30G did the same thing. I messed around with it and found that if I applied pressure to the bottom right corner the sound would come back. It was actually a little closer to the wheel- but not on the wheel. So- being the genius that I am... I got a pair of vice grips and put them on my IPOD (gently gripping it- using the cover it came with to not scratch the face) and sure enough it worked for a while. I over tightened the pliers one time and my trick stopped working. I don't recommend you do this, but if you do, don't over tighten.
I came to the conclusion that there has to be a loose resistor, or chip, or something or another that when I pushed down on it, it would make contact.
I opened it up to see if I could solder it, but the electronics on this thing are too small to attempt it. I am now going to send it for repair, if it is more expensive to repair- then I'm gonna buy a new one.

Good luck.

take a small precision flat head screwdriver and open it up and look for damage. you can open it on the side by the fast forward button.
