Well the best language in my opinion to start off with is definitely python. Java is pretty easy but i would not recommend it as a first language, C++ is easy as well but is a huge language. If you want to be a really good programmer you should definitely get familiar with lisp, perl and C. I would also learn C before you learn C++.

Hi Iron cross thank you so much for your help, what i cudn't undrstand is according to the installation instruction, it says we will see the java icon in the desktop, which i don't see. I don't either see in the start menu or the taskbar.I just see netbeans everywhere.

Another thing. I don't want to use netbeans, being newbie i would rather go for notepad and dos for compiling. So i have set the ENV Variables (Does it work only after rebooting computer? ) cuz when i write source code of hello world in the notepad and try to compile in a dos it says (COMMAND INPUT OUTPUT ERROR) nOW according to the documentation I went to the directory of jsdk directory in the root drive. (using win2k)

There it just says Error:1

I have uninstalled and reinstalled j2sdk 1_4_2, atleast 4 times so far, still can't even see it's icon. Shall i reformat computer or ??

pls help

You don't have to see the java icon...I don't think I ever see it, yet Java works fine for me. I would suggest using JCreator. It's small and simple. It will be better than notepad but not near as overwhelming as netbeans.

As for the env vars. After setting them, use them in the command line like %somevar%.

As for the error show us the source code for your program, and the command you were using to compile and run the program and we can help
