It's amazing isn't it ? I'm told by a reliable source (someone programming for over 20 years) that he still sees a fair amount of COBOL as well.

That is true, COBOL isn't as old as FORTRAN though and it isn't around for the same reason. I haven't used either language myself but from what I understand FORTRAN is used because it is still at the top of it's game (scientific, engineering). COBOL is still around because many, now legacy, business apps were extensively built in it and they occasionally need things done with them. Not saying COBOL isn't a good language (though I hear it is overly verbose) but it is no longer a language of choice in it's area of interest (business).

And don't forget what I mentioned above, you can get Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition absolutely free. No time limit. Nada.

No prob. If you get a book it can help as well. Some people don't care to learn from books but I think they are a nice complimentary way of learning. Works for me anyway.

Also, swing by here any time with any questions you may have and usually someone can help

Yeah if you can get any of those VB text books and follow it through you'll be prety well set. That mostly what school courses are, just having you follow a standardized text book. Sourceforge of course is a good place to check for code samples if you can't figure out how to do something, too.

You can thank us by sending up some warm weather to us! It was already snowing in parts of Maine as of yesterday.
