I found Visual Basic to be very easy as well. It's supposed to be a good start language and there are a lot of resources for it.

I have used several languages, including VB, Java, Javascript, SQL, some C#.

For creating applications, Visual Basic is fairly easy. Good starting language for applications. For web stuff, learning HTML (not a programming language but worth learning) and Javascript (a scripting language) are both useful and also fairly straightforward once you get the hang of them a bit.

EDIT: Oh and I forgot what I was going to say about VB and C#. Programs can be written and compiled from withing Visual Basic Express Edition ( and what's cool about that is it's all free )

I can recommend java. Not necessarily the very easiest but it isn't difficult to work out and it is very useful and powerful.

It's amazing that fortran is still used as much as it is. I have a lot of friends studying physics and they all have to learn fortran.
