for extra credit i need to turn some binary into numbers... i think im doing it right but keep getting numbers over 26...

we have to turn it into number and then unscramble the letters...

Could ANYONE just put the binary into numbers for me?

0010000 is one of the ones i cant figure out... i get 32... but my teacher says we shouldnt get over 26

calc.exe is your friend on this one.

0010000 = 2^4

read from right to left, start with 0. if the bit is a 1, make a note of your counter.

0 - miss 0
0 - miss 1
0 - miss 2
0 - miss 3
1 - hit 2^4
0 - miss 5
0 - miss 6

create yourself a number line going

64 32 16 8 4 2 1

and then put the binary number underneath it, e.g.:

Code:
Number line:  64 32 16  8  4  2  1
             ---------------------
Binary:        0  0  1  0  0  0  0
reading across you can see that:

0x64
0x32
1x16
0x8
0x4
0x2
0x1

since the only number you have is 16 the answer is 16 so 0010000 = 16

as csamules says windows calculator will do it for you. stick it in scientific mode and you can convert between binary, hex, octal and decimal

I get 32 for 00100000 and my teacher says there is no 32 because of the alphabet as i said but i just cant figure this out! I try and try and try but nothing...

if you want it quick, you can write scripts to do it..such as this perl script
assuming your binary data are stored inside a text file

open(FH, "binaries.txt" ) or die $!;
@all = <FH>;
for my $bi (@all) {
@line = split(' ',$bi);
for my $line (@line){
print "$line" . " -> " . ord(pack('B8', $line)) . "\n";
}
}
close(FH);

The reason you are finding this hard is because your teacher is giving you wrong information. you are correct in getting 32 for 00100000 because it is 32. If you want info on the alphabet in binary try http://www.tekmom.com/buzzwords/binaryalphabet.html.

Have some faith in what you are doing, since it sounds to me like you are doing it correctly, if not try using what other people have posted - ghostdog74's script will give you an answer in seconds, or you can calculate them yourself using the methods above, or just use windows calculator.

Can't do it on line. So each binary string is 8 digits or two four digits. So the first one 00000100 is really 0000 and 0100 or 04 can you count in binary?

0000
0001
0010
0011
0100
0101
0110
0111
1000
1001

00000001 = 0 1 = A

There are exactly 100 characters to convert

100 is a perfect square

this isnt actual coarse credit stuff its just xtra credit and he told us we could seek help

the alphabet starts at decimal 65 on the ascii chart
