I work for a school and we would like to set it up so that the students who use the internet have to provide a user name and password before continuing on to another web page and if they try to navigate away from the login page before logging in they will be forwarded back to the login screen.

I have seen this done at local colleges but I do not know how it is done. I would prefer to make it a web application written in PHP and using a MySQL database.

I don't believe you can do this with PHP, as PHP only works on the current page it is on. Unless, of course, you are making an interweb.
