| Hey everyone (New to forums) I am learning programming, something I have always wanted to do. Everyone keeps telling me im too old but screw um' (by the way im 18). I started learning VB 6.0 figuring this would give me a solid background in programming and would allow me to advance to better structures such as C, and then C++.Lately I have been having some doubts about whether VB was smart to learn first. I know it is useful to learn but it doesnt seem applicable. Most people say either I should have just jumped right into C , or VB.NET. What do you guys think ? I am not looking for a career in computer game programming (although it would be nice) I just wanted to learn how code in these few months I have before I start college and majored in computer sciences. I figure the more background I have in coding before I go to school the better. Plus its just **** fUN ~ I'm loving every minute of it. |

| There is nothing wrong with learning VB6 first, but VB.NET would be better. Also the VB kind of language is good to learn before languages such as C++ becuase you can absorb programming basics (things such as arrays) easier.

| Skipping C will in no way cripple your skills, it would even help because you will have more time for C++. So little programs are written in C now. C lacks object obrientation which isnt a good thing.

| Does anyone know a good C++ book to buy? I already have the background in VB so it doesnt have to assume you are a complete beginner. Although I have never worked with C++ so a book for a complete beginner is probably what I should get. The book I got for VB was "Beginning Visual Basic 6" by Peter Wright and I liked the book alot. His approach was very interesting and I was able to absorb the information very well. |
