Well, a char array is always a char * anyway. I wanted a thing to point to char * arrays so I wanted a char ** element. current = & (address of) last would have been the proper level of abstraction.
** also refers to double indirection, so indirect once should have me accessing what current points to, and indirect twice should have me accessing what last points to.
As it turns out, none of this is neccesary because of the special way that char arrays are treated.
