Are you running the file locally or on a server?

Exactly ^^^ there were 2 problems. I was trying to run it from my comp which doesn't have any server software and the end of the file had to be .asp. My teacher didn't really explain it too much but I finally got it by running it from the server through frontpage. Thanks guys.
