1st time I made a site was through an online site builder, then i clicked the advanced button when done.. saw the html, almost shat myself.. then learned it but get a wysiwyg editor (dreamweaver is awesome), and you can see how things work. best way to learn is from experience... at least for me. (reading books someone else wrote.. from experience, sucks.)
