Red face Is it cool to be introduced to programming with C++

Niaje Wasee! ("was`up guys" in Swahili)

I am a first year computer technology student at university and I have no experience with programming save for a small unit in principles of progamming languages in first semester. It is only in this semester that we are supposed to take introduction to programming as a unit. In the course outline given to us earlier we were supposed to learn C. I have read a lot about C and all it`s virtues which I am sure all of you guys know. I thought introduction to programming should be done with one of the procedural languages-the OOPs are based on them. However our lecturer insists on C++. What are your views on this guys?

Well C++ is not the best language to start off with. C would have been a better choice, some good starting languages are python and pascal. During your studies you should try learn assembly, C, and some other like perl, lisp and python.

Hey,

I am a freshman and first programming language I ever studied was C++... The first portion of the course taught procedural programming, and later on we began on OOP. Maybe your course will be the same?? I am now in Comp & Programming II and am not having that much difficulty - but, from my point of view it takes lots and lots of practice to understand C++.

before we are going to learn C++, we need to learn about Visual Basic.
but then, actually it is not a problem.
since you can understand the concept of OOP as well as the fundamentals of programming such as "if", "do...while" and so on.
it maybe useful when writing any application as programming is required your logic skill and the syntax may come second important.

I disagree. C++ and C are alike in several aspects, its just that C++ relies on object-oriented programming.

I started with C++ and didn't have a bit of trouble.

Starting with C++ shouldnt pose any problem at all. It might even be good if you are not interested in assembly languages and want to go for OOP languages only.

Oh yes, most definetely. It doesn't matter if you start with C or C++, either one is great.

I second that, especially in regards to Python, since it has some real "out of school" use, whereas I believe Pascal was developed simply for the purpose of teaching programming (I think...)

I can't wait to start learning how to use C++ next semester in my programming class! That should be a lot of fun, I think you should learn C++ too.

You can excel in C++ without having to take other programming languages, it is just that you have to put some effort into learning the coding, but you will be fine.
