| Writing a forum software that is in any way usable is really something above and beyond the level of someone writing a "How To" on. Just use vBulletin or phpBB.

What do you need to run a PHP board on your own server if you refuse to use apache? |

| I dont know... an install of PHP for whatever server software you use?
I would suggest you use Apache. It is the gold standard and it'll save you a lot of trouble.
You might as well use some kind of board written in ASP or something if you want to use MS server software.
mySQL and Apache is the only real way to go.

| It would really depend on the bulletin board software. phpBB supports a bunch of mySQL versions, but I do not know about MSSQL.
All SQL servers require different 'drivers' (interface code).
