Default Code for a web counter

Hi all
Im the editor of my school website, and was looking for a way to record statistics of how many people visit the site.
I know that there are many places that will record this for you, but my school doesn't want other sites knowing all our statistics.
Does anyone know of (or know where to get) code to put together my own counter?
Thanks a lot

are you hosting your own website? or do you have other company host it for you?

my host provides me with cpanel and webalizer, awstats, and analog statistic packages.

Im pretty sure we have a company hosting it. I only access the site through FTP, though, so I don't know which company would be hosting it, and if they have a stat counter.
