Default beginner language

i need to think about choosing a language to learn, apart form visual basic, because ive just started college and we have to learn two different languages, and the teacher will teach us one while we learn about the other on our own. seeming as im learning visual basic, is there any other one which is different, but not so different that learning VB wont help me with the other language, if u see what i mean

basically what language is good to learn in parallel with Visual Basics for someone who knows nothing about programming (except some VBA and Html)?

I don't know that any language is good to learn in parallel with VB. Actually, I don't think learning any two languages in parallel is a good idea. But if I had to pick a language to learn along with VB, I'd choose C# since they both use the same .NET framework class libraries.

Id choose Java.....because its what i learned first...but c++ is good too. Java is good to learn on because it will tell you what you are doing wrong and where the error is in a program. C++ just runs what you throw at it and screws up and doesnt help you at all....

+1 for C#. It's easy and a good stepping stone for harder languages like C++.

Another good one that's easy to learn is Python. But you'll probably get into GUI stuff quicker with C#.
