Apache and cgi-bin

what changes are needed in conf. file(Apache) to run the executable programs(written in C)from the browser like http:\\localhost\cgi-bin\1.exe

when i place the exec file in cgi-bin dir and try to run it from the browser,it says "internal server error"in apache error logs i saw sth about " child process"
and when i try to run the php scripts that exists in cgi-bin the error in apache logs==this is not an executable program(or sth like this)but i can run this script when its in htdocs..
