Default Overclocking question.

Got a basic understanding of the how. But i've often wondered the what. In particular, the multiplier. When changing the multiplier what exactly am i changing in the operation of the CPU to change the operating frequency?

Default Re: Overclocking question.

The CPU's speed can be determined by its multiplier multiplied (duh) by the FSB e.g. in my CPU it is a 17x multiplier times by 200FSB to give me 3.4Ghz. By increasing the multiplier, u are simply multiplying 200 by one more, so if i increased mine to 18x (for argument's sake...) then i would have a clock speed of 3.6Ghz and so forth...but this will NOT affect my quadpumped FSB, so i would still have a FSB of 800Mhz, even though my core clock is higher.

yea, but what is the multiplier changing? the number of threads executed? is it just another descriptor given to how the speed is calculated? or what?
