Default OC'ing problem

I found a computer about a year ago, got it working fine, with a nice overclock. About a month ago, I took it back to core speeds (while I was demonstrating the bios clear function to a mate). I just tried overclocking again yesterday and even the smallest increase sends the temps up at a nearly exponential rate! The northbridge is also pretty hot even when the pc isn't under load. Any theories?
