LED question..

What would happen if I had say, a 5v LED and hooked it to a 12v powersource, without a resister? I already know it turns on, it doens't like fry it or anything. Will anything bad happen?

So I take it this is a long term effect? When I put my 5V LED to a 12v power source, it just turns on...lol

what? LED are very sensitive to high forward voltage but no the other way around. it's going to burn without resistors to take out the excessive current. don't do it man.
