Default hard drive wont boot

I bought my new WD740 74GB raptor hard drive from newegg along with the rest of my new computer parts, but I've found that the drive won't boot, instead it just makes this loud clicking noise a few times at startup. In my bios settings it reports the drive as a WD800BB 0.0GB. When I try to install windows 2000, I get more clicking and then
"Disk I/O error: Status = 00002001"
I don't have another setup to test this on, is there anyway I can check to see if the drive is broken, or ideally is there anything I can do to get the drive working?

sounds like the drive is dead, i think that there is a program u can use to tell u the condition of the drive, i would suggest returning it to newegg for a new one.
