Default GPU OC question

A freind of mine OC'd his gpu, not knowing what he was doing, he OC'd it too much. Temp spikes and crashed.. After reboot, it still stayed OC'd. So as its a dell, and he has the top service package, he called them. They eventually reformatted, guess it was time, but the card won't go back to stock settings. And, i said he was a noob, forgot what he used to OC it....

BTW, this is just from what hes telling me. I haven't actually seen it.

As gpus OC by software, why wouldn't after a format the card go back to default.

Any suggestions?

The only possible way he could have overclocked it and had it permanently stick through even a format would be to flash the bios of the card. I think something else is going on.

Most anything thats been made in the last 5 or so years has builtin failsafes that wont let them burn up using software overclocking. But being that its a dell, i think thats about half of the problem right there.
