Default Friend having problems

First, can someone move this thread, I can, for some reason, only start threads in here...

Ok, well my friend updated his comp and when he restarted it only the backround came up. nothing else. (computer illiterate person)

Booting into safe mode, just brought up a blank screen with a cursor.

what is going on?

xp. I am booting with the xp home cd now. If I do a restore, will I keep all the info?

And I have a back up from nero of all the stuff that is on the boot drive, how will I put all that back on there. I just want the information, I dont want to overlap the other drive. And what is the admin password? I asked one of the users, and she said that they didnt use a password to get in. What password am I looking for? leave messages please

The person who owns it does not know what the admin password is. when I tell it (when I am under restore) to boot to C: windows. it asks for the password.

Do I need to boot to C? or somewhere else? It is an HP, incase that matters
