I would recheck the heatsink because those are temps I would expect with a stock heatsink for that small of a overclock.

Yeah, those temps are a little out of control for such a small increase...

It does not need to be real tight but there should be no wiggle in it if you gently move it when installed.

Whatever you do, don't tighten it too tight, you could damage the motherboard.

Try reapplying the thermal compound, and reseating the HSF, like you said. See what happens.

You have a EVGA X58 mobo so why are you using Real Temp and Speedfan? Go to EVGA.com and download the E-LEET utility. It's made for EVGA by CPU-Z and it reports speeds, voltages, temperatures and it even lets you adjust bios settings on the fly for testing and overclocking. Any adjustment made using E-LEET will reset when you restart the system so keep a record of your changes and manually set them in your bios. You should also download and update your mobo to the latest bios.

EVGA | EVGA's E-LEET Tuning Utility | EVGA's E-LEET Tuning Utility

You should also avoid the Dummy OC option and make the adjustments on your own. I also have the EVGA X58 mobo and a couple i7 920 cpu's (1 C stepping and 1 D stepping).

Here are my bios settings for the i7 920 C stepping at 4Ghz using Corsair DDR3 1600 memory. You'll probably need to make a few adjustments (your memory settings may be different etc...) but these settings should be close enough to get you started.

Mother Board ( EVGA X58 SLI )
Drivers ( )
Bios ( SZ2D )
CPU ( i7 920 )
CPU Cooler ( Thermalright True Copper )
Memory ( 3x2GB Corsair DDR3 1600 )
PSU ( Cooler Master 1250 )
GPU ( GTX280 X 2 )
Drivers ( 185.68 )
Operating System ( Vista 64)

Frequency Control
CPU Clock Ratio ( 19X )
CPU Host Frequency (Mhz) ( 212 )
MCH Strap ( 1600 )
CPU Uncore Frequency (Mhz) ( 3397Mhz { 16X } )
CPU Clock Skew ( 0 ps )
Spread Spectrum ( Disabled )
PCIE Frequency (Mhz) ( 100 )

Memory Feature
Memory Speed ( Standard )
Memory Control Setting ( Enabled )
Memory Frequency ( 800Mhz / 2:6 )
Channel Interleave Setting ( 6 Way )
Rank Interleave Setting ( 4 Way )
Memory Low Gap ( Auto )
tCL Setting ( 8 )
tRCD Setting ( 8 )
tRP Setting ( 8 )
tRAS Setting ( 19 )
tRFC Setting ( 59 )
Command Rate ( 1t )

Voltage Control
EVGA VDroop Control ( With VDroop )
CPU VCore ( 1.400 )
CPU VTT Voltage ( +300 )
CPU PLL VCore ( 1.75 )
DIMM Voltage ( 1.65 )
DIMM DQ Vref ( +0 )
QPI PLL VCore ( 1.300 )
IOH VCore ( 1.375 )

Intel HT Technology ( Enabled )
Active Processor Cores ( All )
QPI Control Settings ( Enabled )
QPI Link Fast Mode ( Enabled )
QPI Frequency Selection ( 4.800 GT/s )
OC Recorvery ( Enabled )

And here are my settings for 4.2Ghz with the i7 920 D stepping cpu and some OCZ DDR3 2000 memory

Mother Board ( EVGA X58 SLI )
Drivers ( )
Bios ( SZ2D )
CPU ( i7 920 )
CPU Cooler ( Thermalright True Copper )

PCIE Frequency (Mhz) ( 100 )

Memory Feature
Memory Speed ( Standard )
Memory Control Setting ( Enabled )
Memory Frequency ( 1067Mhz / 2:8 )
Channel Interleave Setting ( 6 Way )
Rank Interleave Setting ( 4 Way )
Memory Low Gap ( Auto )
tCL Setting ( 7 )
tRCD Setting ( 7 )
tRP Setting ( 7 )
tRAS Setting ( 20 )
tRFC Setting ( 54 )

Voltage Control
EVGA VDroop Control ( Without VDroop )
CPU VCore ( 1.300 )
CPU VTT Voltage ( +100 )
CPU PLL VCore ( 1.75 )
DIMM Voltage ( 1.60 )
DIMM DQ Vref ( +0 )

Active Processor Cores ( All )
QPI Control Settings ( Enabled )
QPI Link Fast Mode ( Enabled )
QPI Frequency Selection ( 4.800 GT/s )
OC Recorvery ( Enabled )

And here are a few tips

You need to raise your VCore if you get a BSOD that says something like - "Clock Interrupt not received from Secondary Processor". The error code usually ends in 101

You need to raise your CPU VTT Voltage if you get a BSOD or error message ending in 124 that says "General Hardware Failure"

Note: VTT voltage must be within 0.5V of VDimm. Vdimm can fluctuate by as much as 0.05V from settings so you may want VTT within 0.45V of VDimm for that extra margin of safety. Example: if Vdimm is 1.65V, then VTT must be at least 1.20V. The default VTT is 1.1V and your adjustments are given as 100mV, 150mV, 200 mV etc... If you raise your VTT by 200mV your outcome is 1.1V + 200mV = 1.3V

If you need more help or advise and I don't respond here just PM me

If you read the application directions for thermal paste, it generally calls for roughly a grain of rice to a half pea in terms of volume.
