Default cpu swapping

Backgrond:

I have a Dell Dimension 4800 (it's a couple years old) and I've started to upgrade it due to doom 3. I now have a 128mb nvidia card (modded by BFG) and I upgraded my ram to 1.gb. I have a larger hard drive (to be my second) on my way so I wanted to tackle my next problem.

Question

I have 2.4 Mhz processor, so my question is, is it possible to upgrade the cpu to a 3.4 or 3.6 without changing the motherboard and how much would it run me?

Thanks for helping out a noob!

What socket or Pentium/Celeron do you have? I think 3.4 is the highest you can get if you have socket 478.
I think 3.6+ are all 775.
If you do, here it is http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...ductCode=80665

If I were you, I would spend more money on the graphics card than the processor.

I'm pretty content with my vid card for now (considering i just dropped 300 on it) How do i found out my socket?

(Vid card is a 128mb Nvida 6800 overclocked and cooled by BFG, it runs doom 3 ok, but I thought more mhz would help me better.)

Run CPU-Z and see if it is a 533 or 800 fsb. If it is 533 your max is 2.8GHz, if it is 800, 3.4GHz is your max.

The socket 775 start at 2.8GHz, so it isn't that.

FSB 133
Bus is 532

Lol so I guess any upgrade I could possibly do wouldn't be worth the money huh?

Ok so back to the whole video card thing, is it possible to get a better card than I have now for 300? because I'm looking at 256mb cards and there hitting close to 500.

BFG nVIDIA GeForce 6800 Video Card, 128MB DDR, 256-Bit, TV-Out/DVI, 8X AGP, Model "BFGR6800OC" <---my card now

I used to have a 9800 pro but it overheated and died lol
