Default Best way to know if your HD is failing or not???

How do you know if your HD is failing or not i saw the .S.M.A.R.T. results but i don't know what the worst and those values mean. So can someone could tell me what each of those value mean? Also how do people get their hard drives to fail? overheating? overusing? ???

MB: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 v3.3 F12
RAM: 2 Kingston HyperX DDR2 800MHz (4GB total)
CPU: Core 2 Duo E6320 @variable rates (will fix my fan problem soon and overclock high again)
HSF: Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme & Antec Tricool 120mm fan
PSU: Delta Serverpower 550W
HD: Seagate 400GB ST340032AS & Excelstor 80GB (both SATA)
Case: don't know what case it is but it is very crappy
Optical Drive: Lite-on 16X DVD+&- RW DL (died) using a CD-ROM drive until I get a new blu ray burner or whatever i can get

If a hard drive is failing, you would more than likely notice it. They often make bad noises, make the system crash, etc..

It could fail due to being hot all the time. Heat increases wear on parts, so if it's hot it will fail more quickly.

A HDD will eventually just fail though, there's nothing you can do to prevent it. There's a lot of complicated and precision moving parts inside it, one tiny little bit of play or incorrectness will make it fail. One little spec of dust inside will cause it to fail.

Whats actually considered hot for a harddrive?

My Maxtor runs at about 36-40oC

Those temperatures, are perfectly normal.

Actually I heard that the warmer the hard drive is, the longer the lifespan.

excellent! see my friends keep telling me having a HDD at 342 degrees is just unsafe, but i'll be the one laughing when i have all my data in 50 years time and they are stuck with nothin! har har har

Hdds last longer when WARM not hot or cold. WARM is suppose to be from 45 to 60 degrees centigrade.
