Default RAD for C++ programming

Hi there !

It's my first message on the board and it deals with RAD for C++ programming. Actually, i'm a student and i got to build a C++ program working on VisualC++. The file downloaded on the MSDN (available only for students) doesn't seem to work.
So i heard about Visual C++ Express 2005. I've downloaded the file and i am trying to get it install but i am awaiting for 7 hours and the progress bar isn't moving on ... Well, i'll be patient...
Yet, in the case it wouldn't work, is there any RAD that i can use to make my C++ project and of course for free.

Actually, I don't care of VisualC++ but the teacher stressed that our program must work with it. So do you think I can use another free RAD to make the program that keeps working with VisualC++ ?
It would be nice and help me to go on with my project.

Regards
