The iPod Hi-Fi is multi-purpose. It can be used as a home theater replacement as well as iPod speaker system.

However, if you have the money, I suggest buying it. The quality is un-surpassed by any competitors and the design, technical and aesthetical, is top-notch.
It's a home theatre replacement? Disagree. I would argue that home theatre systems shouldn't be contained in one speaker box.

For $350, its sound quality had better be incredible, because for what it is, it seems very overpriced. I haven't tried one, but I know for that cost you can get a quality minisystem with auxilary ports you can hook up the iPod to (JVC, Panasonic, etc).

If you're intend on the iPod dock-speaker system idea, Apple's product is definitely not the only option. Bose (link) has one for $299 (still expensive for what these products are). Without having tried either, I would put my money on Bose over Apple for sound quality, but I can't make that statement; I have not listened to either of these systems. Logitec (link) also has a couple such products, that are much cheaper, appear much more portable, but I would guess probably don't have the sound quality to the Bose and Apple products.

Again, I haven't tried any of these products, so please do correct me on any of these (semi-educated) guesses .
