The reason you are finding this hard is because your teacher is giving you wrong information. you are correct in getting 32 for 00100000 because it is 32. If you want info on the alphabet in binary try

Have some faith in what you are doing, since it sounds to me like you are doing it correctly, if not try using what other people have posted - ghostdog74's script will give you an answer in seconds, or you can calculate them yourself using the methods above, or just use windows calculator.
