You're right Chris. The 2 modems on the same line will have conflicting signals, and probably wouldnt be able to stay online.

Yes, you can put a 56K and a DSL modem on the same line, just the same as talking on the phone while using your DSL modem. The only thing here is that the DSL modem needs to make use of a dedicated line and splitter or use all those silly filters around the house, including the outlet for the 56K modem.
