I would't recommend Knoppix. Mandriva I haven't treid so I can't say.

Just to check you are inserting the Ubuntu CD, then restarting your computer, not inserting it when the computer starts. I'm not insulting you its just from your wording for your post it sounds as if your not. I may have misunderstood.
