Default PC to stereo connection

My cousin copied his 100 GB music collection for me and I would like to enjoy it on good quality speakers. This means that I need to hook up my computer to my stereo. I come up with two options:

1) run the speaker out of my sound card into the back of the receiver.
this would involve a splitter, a 40 foot 1/8” to 1/8” cable, and a y-splitter. What would be the quality of my signal? Would it be stereo or mono? How much signal attenuation/degradation would I experience? Would there be any noise?

2) buy a media hub
This seams like a good option but they are pricey.

Which one should I go with? The goal is good sound quality, and if they will perform the same, then I’ll go with the cables. Also, if you have any more options feel free to add them.
